VCNNHS Observes National School Safety Week 2026
Vicenta C. Nograles National High School conducted an earthquake drill at 9:00 AM on October 15, as part of the National School Safety week, engaging students in a practical actions during earthquake. The drill spearheaded by the School Head, Mr. Renz Angelo D. Calzada and the School's DRRM Coordinator, Ms. Mariel Reyes.
Earthquakes occur due to sudden movements along fault lines in the Earth's crust, releasing energy that travels as seismic waves. The Philippines, situated along the Pacific โRing of Fire,โ is especially vulnerable to such seismic events. Understanding the science behind earthquakes helps students grasp why these natural phenomena happen and the importance of timely, organized responses.
During the drill, students practiced โDrop, Cover, and Holdโ - a globally recommended safety procedure validated by seismologists and disaster experts. This technique minimizes injury by protecting vital areas of the body and sheltering individuals from falling debris, a major cause of harm during earthquakes.
Technology also plays a key role in earthquake preparedness. Early warning systems, which detect initial seismic waves and alert communitiesโ seconds before strong shaking arrives, are already being developed and implemented in many earthquake-prone countries. Although not yet widespread locally, these advancements represent the future of saving lives.
While the drill was not without its challenges, it was an essential learning experience. It highlighted how preparedness, backed by scientific knowledge and technology, is crucial to reducing risks and enhancing safety.
For Vicenta C. Nograles NHS, educating students about the scientific causes of earthquakes and training them in proper responses through earthquake drills reinforces the vital role of science and technology in disaster readiness, because understanding the earthโs movements today helps protect lives tomorrow.
